Mushy Mucky Mud and the Planting People

What a huge day we had today!
Our whole school planted 600 plants along the Waiomou stream next to our school.
We lugged plants up and down the steep slippery hill. We dug holes in the mushy mucky sucky mud, even as it tried to suck our boots right off our feet. Next we tickled the roots of the plants loose and then packed them safely in to their new homes. Everyone worked hard and had lots of muddy fun all washed down with a hot sausage and bread off the BBQ.

A very special visitor

Room 8 at Bellevue school in Tauranga sent us a cool Flat Stanley that they had made. We laminated him so that he stays safe on his adventures with us.
Thank you Room 8 for taking one of our Flat Stanleys on adventures with you too :-)

Being observant is a great skill that helps us learn to read.
Being "observant" means we look very closely at something and think carefully about it using things we already know or understand.

Most of our plants have grown lots, even some of our spare ones.
On Friday they were still little, now they are longer than a pencil.
They are starting to grow leaves.
There are some that haven't come out of the ground yet. We wonder why?
Some of them have roots coming out of the bottom of their pots in to the water, but not all of them.

Wow - when we got to school this morning there are now lots of little shoots popping out of the soil.
Only the snow peas are growing so far.

Today we planted some seeds.
We worked out that to start with they needs:
Dirt (soil)
Water
Care
Sun and not too cold.

We planted Nasturtium flowers and Sugar Snap Peas.

What is a conjunction?

In reading we have been learning about conjunctions.

We decided that a conjunction is used to make what we write shorter and to make it sound more like when we talk. The apostrophe is put in to take the place of the missing letters.

Bronlee brought two great books that helped us learn about conjunctions we use every day, here are some of the ones we came up with:

Flat Stanley news

As I'm sure most of you are aware our Flat Stanleys are VERY, VERY busy exploring the world both near and far. I've heard whispers that this weekend he went driving in a Limo near Brisbane in Australia, that he headed in to Russia and that he has begun some exciting adventures with other school children just like us. Best of all though he took his weekly trip with one lucky Room One student that has demonstrated all the Kura Kids qualities.

We hope you got our email saying that Stanley would have some adventures with us after the holidays.

We are reading Flat Stanley . We are sending our own Stanley to someone we know. Stanley is going to London to see Mrs Seath's boys. He is lucky.

Your Stanley is in Room 8 doing things with us. We will send you lots of pictures.

Buddy Class

It's taken a little while to organise but WE HAVE A BUDDY CLASS.
Here is the first email we received from them:

Hello Year 1 at Kuranui School

we are Year 1B at Newfield Primary School.  We are very excited about being able to email a class in New Zealand.

Here is a bit about us.  Our school is in London and is called Newfield Primary School.  Our Head Teacher is called Ms Bolt and our class teacher is Miss Bates.  We have 30 children in our class who are 5 or 6 years old.

At the moment we are learning all about Britain.  After half term we are going to learn about New Zealand.

We would like to learn more about New Zealand.  We have thought of some questions to ask you.

What does your school look like?
What special things do you have in your country?
What special food do you have?

Madison had a newly hatched monarch butterfly, it was still flexing its soft new wings.

Jacob's tooth

At Kapahaka today we had some excitement, so we thought we had better write a letter to the Tooth Fairy. Do you think the Tooth Fairy will like our letter?

Dear Tooth Fairy

Today at Kapahaka when we were practising the rakau Jacob banged his top front tooth.

He thought it was just bleeding but his tooth had actually come out.

We looked for the tooth at morning-tea time but it is nowhere to be found.

We are very sorry, please be kind to Jacob.
