Racy Room One Runners

The sun rose over a crystal clear Waikato spring day.
The dew had dried by the time the first runners left the blocks and I'm pleased to say we had a 100% attendance day at school, so it is with pride that we can recognise that every single child who attends Kuranui School ran and completed cross country.

Here are some of the amazing runners from Room 1 - as your teacher I am bursting with pride for each and every one of you!!!

X-country training

Our cross country is coming up soon and as you can see we have been training very hard.
We all have our own personal goals but most importantly our aim is to run our best and never give up because that's what true Kura Kids do!

Bronlee’s Shell-less Egg

This was our exciting class news today. 

We used this cool opportunity to practise our growing questioning skills.

Thank you Bronlee for answering us so clearly, we all learnt lots.

Questions:

1. Where did you find it? (Shianne)

In the nest when mum went to get the eggs in the morning.

2. Why did it turn out like that? (Conor)

Because the hen didn’t get enough grit and the egg wasn’t warm enough.

3. Why does your mum like getting the eggs? (Madison)

Because we like eating them and soon we might be selling them in the newsletter.

4. Why does it feel scaly? (Rikardo)

Because that’s just how they feel.

5. Why did it crack a bit? (Jacob)

It might be the way its been sitting in the box.

6. Which chicken was it from? (Brendon)

Do you mean like which hen laid it? One of our black hens maybe because she was the only one laying out of that pen of chickens.

7. Why does your mum do the eggs night and morning? (Dylan)

So that if the hen gets off it, it doesn’t go cold and the chick dies inside it.

8. How does it get warm or cold? (Conor)

If the hen sits on it her feathers keep it warm but sometimes she’s not actually sitting on it or she might be playing with the other hens or getting some food or water.

Madison said – just like how Mrs Jones warmed Ms Daniels’s seat.

9. When did the hen lay it? (Benjamin Y)

Yesterday.

Procedural Writing - Shoulder Stands

We are learning how to write procedures.
We had to include a list of things we needed, then practise our shoulder stands so we were clear about what we had to write.
Next we wrote our instructions and then tested them to make sure we hadn't missed anything important.
We recorded us performing shoulder stands in pairs according to the instructions we wrote.

The Gruffalo Show

Woohoo, grimble, grumble – with a slash of wind off sped the big yellow bus to Rotorua on Tuesday 30 August to watch The Gruffalo. The windy roads made me feel dizzy. When Room 1 and Room 3 reached Rotorua, it looked wonderful with all the flowers showing but I’d better tell you a secret, Rotorua stinks a lot!

Finally we got to the show, the mouse was as funny as a clown as he tiptoed behind the gruffalo, poking her tongue out and wiggling her bottom.  The gruffalo roared like a lion and was a bit scary but in the end he was afraid of the clever little mouse.

At the show we had all felt hungry so we leapt back onto the us and zoomed off to the park. We gobbled down some food and played on the playground until it started to drizzle really hard.

Mrs Goodwin drove us safely back to school just in time to eat more food. What a great day, I loved The Gruffalo show!

Kung Fu Punctuation

We are learning how to punctuate our writing, we find it a bit hard so we decided to try and find a fun way to help us remember the different marks we need.

Baa baa - guess who visits our class?

Ms Daniels's daughter brings her lamb to school two or three days a week. The lamb's name is Kaos, she loves coming to visit Room One, especially having stories read to her or watching the children write about her crazy adventures.

Virtual Flying

How exciting today we went on some virtual flights using Google Earth.
We found our school then took flights to:

1. Waikato Hospital to see where Madison and Flat Stanley had been and say "Hi" to Chloe's nana.
2. Lichfield School to say "Hi" to Rion.
3. The Auckland SKy Tower just for fun.

On the way to school today…

Oh no falling sheep!

On the way to school today I saw fat sheep falling from the sky into a hot pool, sheep fell into it like a bit of rain.

Shaking trees wibble and wobble to the music inside. The trees were shaking like a volcano erupting.

I wonder what I will see tomorrow?

My dog Rosie

Wow! Skin shimmies in the sun, a bright puppy called Rosie runs up to me. I feel happy. She stares at a chewy bone I threw for her, when she caught it she sat on my lap. I patted her; her snow is a soft as snow. She is also cute and a bit fluffy. Rosie is a Caviller King Charles Spaniel. The only time she squeals is if she gets a flea and she barks when something is wrong. Brown and white patches on her body sparkle and shimmer when Rosie walks. Her tail wags as fast as a satellite. I love Rosie!

Making Paper Snowflakes

We are beginning to explore shapes and symmetry. There are many different shapes that can be found all around us and lots of symmetry too.

We are going to make paper snowflakes. The coolest thing about snowflakes is that no two are the same - just like us!

Sniff, sniff, Rosie smelled the children in Room One and the blue tarpaulin.
Scratch, scratch, Rosie's claws rattled on the tarpaulin.
Slurp, slurp Rosie licked Ben S's ear. it felt slimy.
Chomp, chomp, crunch, crunch Rosie's busy nibbling on socks and fingers and the blue tarpaulin.

Mushy Mucky Mud and the Planting People

What a huge day we had today!
Our whole school planted 600 plants along the Waiomou stream next to our school.
We lugged plants up and down the steep slippery hill. We dug holes in the mushy mucky sucky mud, even as it tried to suck our boots right off our feet. Next we tickled the roots of the plants loose and then packed them safely in to their new homes. Everyone worked hard and had lots of muddy fun all washed down with a hot sausage and bread off the BBQ.
Thank you to everyone who came and helped us!!!

A very special visitor

Room 8 at Bellevue school in Tauranga sent us a cool Flat Stanley that they had made. We laminated him so that he stays safe on his adventures with us.
Thank you Room 8 for taking one of our Flat Stanleys on adventures with you too :-)
