2/ Measure the area (inside) of an object.
Today we explored the concept of area.
We decided that the perimeter was the outside or an object and that it surrounded it.
The area is all the filling in the middle.
We compared it to a yard full of cows waiting to be milked:
- the fence on the outside is the perimeter and holds the cows in.
- the cows are the area, if the yard held 25 cows all stood right next to each other, then the area would be 25 cows.
Our task was to use sticky squares and work out the perimeter and area of our place mats.
The perimeter was 18 sticky squares.
The area was 12 sticky squares.
