End of Year Trip

What a great day Room One and Three had today!
Visited the park, a tour of the police station, swim at the pools and lunch at St Josephs school.

Milo Cricket

Wooooo hoooooo - cricket is cool!

We learned the correct way to catch, throw and hit small balls to be able to play cricket.
We need:
- soft hands
- keep our eye on the ball for catching and hitting
- look where we want the ball to go for throwing
- run fast
- work as a team

Arguments?

Room One have discovered that they love sharing their opinions and giving reasons why they think something and that is what argument writing is all about.
We have been exploring some tools to help us organise our thinking so that we can write excellent arguments.

1/ Lines of continuum
At one end you very strongly agree with something and at the other end you totally disagree.

2/Thinkers' Hats - Yellow and Black
When we use the yellow hat we are giving reasons that we see as being positive.
If we use the black hat we are giving negative reasons.
They help us to remember whether we agree or disagree.

Here is our statement can you work out what we thought?

Check back later to find out what our fantastic reasons are.
I wonder who will use their black hat and who will use their yellow hat?

November 10 - What a Day!

Mother Nature was kind to us and gave us a perfect day for inter-school cross country other than a bit of wind. Congratulations to the following children for their outstanding effort and commitment in both their running and behaviour when outside of the school:

5yr old girls
2nd - Shianne
5yr old boys
1st - Ben S
6th - Rikardo
6yr old girls
10th - Chloe
6yr old boys
1st - Conor
11th - Sean
7yr old girls
5th - Bronlee

In addition and no less fabulous was the feedback I got as a teacher on our return to school. I'm thrilled to say that Mrs Jones reported that ALL the rest of Room One demonstrated brilliant manners and 110% commitment to their learning and behaviour. Well Done!!!!!!! I am exceptionally proud of you all!

Sailor, Spoke and Asthma

Today we had an exciting visitor to Kuranui School.
Kim from Project Energize came out to talk to us about asthma - what it feels like and what we do if we get it. Some of the children from Room One and Room Five shared what they do. Kim then told us a story about one of the Home Play challenge characters we had met earlier this year, Spoke, who discovered she had asthma. Her family got her a puffer fish to sit next to her bed to remind her to take her preventative puffer every morning.

Spoke's fish was called "Sailor" and here he is:

The stinky witch

A stinky witch enters the room, a crocked hat sits upon her head. Her eyes are as bruised as someone who has fallen off a cliff.
A firey broom stick flashes through the air as smoke fills the room. The people scatter like autumn leaves falling from the trees.
I love Halloween!

By Bronlee

The Skeleton

The naked bones rattle while the skeleton dances in the dark.
The skeleton glows in the dark just like a glow stick.
The bones smell like they have been buried under ground for 10,000 years.
What a rattly old skeleton.

Happy Holidays to all...

Just so that the All Blacks know that we wish are thinking of them even during the school holidays.

RWC vs Maths

After an exciting weekend of rugby and league we were clever kiwis and put these events to great use to explore and challenge our mathematical brains.

What strategies can you see in action?

Here's a question for you all, please post answers as a comment with your first name and age.

Imagine a Try = 5 points, a Conversion = 2 points and a Penalty = 3 points

The All Blacks scored 38 points in total and the Wallabies scored 36 points.
How might each team have earned their points?   e.g 1 try, 8 penalties, etc.

Woooo hoooo - "Construction Day" has arrived.
Check out our fantastic building, we can now use our mimio board all the way to the tippy top.
A huge thank you to Mr Vincent and Mr Taylor :-)

Racy Room One Runners

The sun rose over a crystal clear Waikato spring day.
The dew had dried by the time the first runners left the blocks and I'm pleased to say we had a 100% attendance day at school, so it is with pride that we can recognise that every single child who attends Kuranui School ran and completed cross country.

Here are some of the amazing runners from Room 1 - as your teacher I am bursting with pride for each and every one of you!!!

X-country training

Our cross country is coming up soon and as you can see we have been training very hard.
We all have our own personal goals but most importantly our aim is to run our best and never give up because that's what true Kura Kids do!

Bronlee’s Shell-less Egg
This was our exciting class news today.
We used this cool opportunity to practise our growing questioning skills.
Thank you Bronlee for answering us so clearly, we all learnt lots.

Questions:
  1. Where did you find it? (Shianne)
In the nest when mum went to get the eggs in the morning.

  1. Why did it turn out like that? (Conor)
Because the hen didn’t get enough grit and the egg wasn’t warm enough.

  1. Why does your mum like getting the eggs? (Madison)
Because we like eating them and soon we might be selling them in the newsletter.

  1. Why does it feel scaly? (Rikardo)
Because that’s just how they feel.

  1. Why did it crack a bit? (Jacob)
It might be the way its been sitting in the box.

  1. Which chicken was it from? (Brendon)
Do you mean like which hen laid it? One of our black hens maybe because she was the only one laying out of that pen of chickens.

  1. Why does your mum do the eggs night and morning? (Dylan)
So that if the hen gets off it, it doesn’t go cold and the chick dies inside it.

  1. How does it get warm or cold? (Conor)
If the hen sits on it her feathers keep it warm but sometimes she’s not actually sitting on it or she might be playing with the other hens or getting some food or water.
Madison said – just like how Mrs Jones warmed Ms Daniels’s seat.

  1. When did the hen lay it? (Benjamin Y)
Yesterday.

Procedural Writing - Shoulder Stands

We are learning how to write procedures.
We had to include a list of things we needed, then practise our shoulder stands so we were clear about what we had to write.
Next we wrote our instructions and then tested them to make sure we hadn't missed anything important.
We recorded us performing shoulder stands in pairs according to the instructions we wrote.

You can check out the actual writing on our Room One Writers Blog.

The Gruffalo Show

Woohoo, grimble, grumble – with a slash of wind off sped the big yellow bus to Rotorua on Tuesday 30 August to watch The Gruffalo. The windy roads made me feel dizzy. When Room 1 and Room 3 reached Rotorua, it looked wonderful with all the flowers showing but I’d better tell you a secret, Rotorua stinks a lot!
Finally we got to the show, the mouse was as funny as a clown as he tiptoed behind the gruffalo, poking her tongue out and wiggling her bottom.  The gruffalo roared like a lion and was a bit scary but in the end he was afraid of the clever little mouse.
At the show we had all felt hungry so we leapt back onto the us and zoomed off to the park. We gobbled down some food and played on the playground until it started to drizzle really hard.
Mrs Goodwin drove us safely back to school just in time to eat more food. What a great day, I loved The Gruffalo show!

Combined writing by:
- Conor, Bronlee, Sean, Jacob.

Wooo hooo - Gruffalo here we come!

Tomorrow we are off to the Gruffalo show with Room 3 - it is extremely exciting.
Please remember to:

  • Bring your lunch, a drink, shoes and a warm jersey.
  • Pack your best manners, 5-star listening skills and super 'Kura Kid' attitude.
Get a good night's sleep and see you all bright and early in the morning.

Arohanui,
Ms Daniels

Kung Fu Punctuation

We are learning how to punctuate our writing, we find it a bit hard so we decided to try and find a fun way to help us remember the different marks we need.

22 August 2011

Baa baa - guess who visits our class?

Ms Daniels's daughter brings her lamb to school two or three days a week. The lamb's name is Kaos, she loves coming to visit Room One, especially having stories read to her or watching the children write about her crazy adventures.
Can you see something special about Kaos?

Virtual Flying

How exciting today we went on some virtual flights using Google Earth.
We found our school then took flights to:

  1. Waikato Hospital to see where Madison and Flat Stanley had been and say "Hi" to Chloe's nana.
  2. Lichfield School to say "Hi" to Rion.
  3. The Auckland SKy Tower just for fun.

On the way to school today…

Oh no falling sheep!
On the way to school today I saw fat sheep falling from the sky into a hot pool, sheep fell into it like a bit of rain.
Shaking trees wibble and wobble to the music inside. The trees were shaking like a volcano erupting.
I wonder what I will see tomorrow?

My dog Rosie

Wow! Skin shimmies in the sun, a bright puppy called Rosie runs up to me. I feel happy. She stares at a chewy bone I threw for her, when she caught it she sat on my lap. I patted her; her snow is a soft as snow. She is also cute and a bit fluffy. Rosie is a Caviller King Charles Spaniel. The only time she squeals is if she gets a flea and she barks when something is wrong. Brown and white patches on her body sparkle and shimmer when Rosie walks. Her tail wags as fast as a satellite. I love Rosie!

Hi Room ONE

There are fantastic learning opportunities happening in your class, I enjoy visiting your blog. I can't wait to see what other special things happen in T. 3.
Who has already got their calf or lamb? Wouldn't it be great if all of you could be involved?
I had a calf every year from when I was 5 years old :-)

Onomatopoeia and a Special Visitor

Shared writing by Room One

W.A.L.T: Use onomatopoeia
S.C: To think and use the words that sound like the action they do.

Whoosh = tail wagging
Pant, pant
Slurp, slurp = licking
Boing, boing = jumping
Chomp, chomp = nibbling on fingers

Sniff, sniff, Rosie smelled the children in Room One and the blue tarpaulin.
Scratch, scratch, Rosie's claws rattled on the tarpaulin.
Slurp, slurp Rosie licked Ben S's ear. it felt slimy.
Chomp, chomp, crunch, crunch Rosie's busy nibbling on socks and fingers and the blue tarpaulin.

Mushy Mucky Mud and the Planting People

What a huge day we had today!
Our whole school planted 600 plants along the Waiomou stream next to our school.
We lugged plants up and down the steep slippery hill. We dug holes in the mushy mucky sucky mud, even as it tried to suck our boots right off our feet. Next we tickled the roots of the plants loose and then packed them safely in to their new homes. Everyone worked hard and had lots of muddy fun all washed down with a hot sausage and bread off the BBQ.
Thank you to everyone who came and helped us!!!

A very special visitor

Room 8 at Bellevue school in Tauranga sent us a cool Flat Stanley that they had made. We laminated him so that he stays safe on his adventures with us.
Thank you Room 8 for taking one of our Flat Stanleys on adventures with you too :-)

Diary of our Plants - Day Eleven "Spot the Difference"

Being observant is a great skill that helps us learn to read.
Being "observant" means we look very closely at something and think carefully about it using things we already know or understand.

How observant are you?

Diary of our Plants - Day Ten

Most of our plants have grown lots, even some of our spare ones.
On Friday they were still little, now they are longer than a pencil.
They are starting to grow leaves.
There are some that haven't come out of the ground yet. We wonder why?
Some of them have roots coming out of the bottom of their pots in to the water, but not all of them.

Diary of our Plants - Day Seven

Wow - when we got to school this morning there are now lots of little shoots popping out of the soil.
Only the snow peas are growing so far.

Diary of our Plants - Day One

Today we planted some seeds.
We worked out that to start with they needs:
Dirt (soil)
Water
Care
Sun and not too cold.

We planted Nasturtium flowers and Sugar Snap Peas.

The Water Cycle Song

This is a very catchy tune to help us remember how the water cycle works.

How does it work?

We are beginning to explore why water is important to us, how we use it and look after it and how the water cycle works:

Check out our "ALLITERATION POEMS"

We have been learning how to recognise and use alliteration - check out our fabulous alliteration animal poems on the Writers Blog.

What is a conjunction?

In reading we have been learning about conjunctions.

We decided that a conjunction is used to make what we write shorter and to make it sound more like when we talk. The apostrophe is put in to take the place of the missing letters.

Bronlee brought two great books that helped us learn about conjunctions we use every day, here are some of the ones we came up with:

I'm         =        I am
I'll          =        I will
I've         =        I have
didn't      =        did not
can't       =        can not
don't      =         do not
couldn't  =        could not
doesn't   =         does not
you're    =         you are
we're     =         we are
we've     =         we have
it's          =         it is

There are hundreds more - what other conjunctions can you think of?

Flat Stanley news

As I'm sure most of you are aware our Flat Stanleys are VERY, VERY busy exploring the world both near and far. I've heard whispers that this weekend he went driving in a Limo near Brisbane in Australia, that he headed in to Russia and that he has begun some exciting adventures with other school children just like us. Best of all though he took his weekly trip with one lucky Room One student that has demonstrated all the Kura Kids qualities.
PLEASE check out our Flat Stanley blog to follow these breaking stories.

Here is an email we have received from Room 8 at Bellevue School:

Hello Room 1
We hope you got our email saying that Stanley would have some adventures with us after the holidays.

We are reading Flat Stanley . We are sending our own Stanley to someone we know. Stanley is going to London to see Mrs Seath's boys. He is lucky.

Your Stanley is in Room 8 doing things with us. We will send you lots of pictures.

Thank you for letting Stanley come to visit us.
Would you like us to send a Stanley to visit you at Kuranui School?

Buddy Class

It's taken a little while to organise but WE HAVE A BUDDY CLASS.
Here is the first email we received from them:

Hello Year 1 at Kuranui School

we are Year 1B at Newfield Primary School.  We are very excited about being able to email a class in New Zealand.

Here is a bit about us.  Our school is in London and is called Newfield Primary School.  Our Head Teacher is called Ms Bolt and our class teacher is Miss Bates.  We have 30 children in our class who are 5 or 6 years old.

At the moment we are learning all about Britain.  After half term we are going to learn about New Zealand.

We would like to learn more about New Zealand.  We have thought of some questions to ask you.

What does your school look like?
What special things do you have in your country?
What special food do you have?

Thanks for being our buddy class!

From Year 1B.

Please read and answer our questions by posting a comment below:

Today we had lots of exciting news brought along to share.

Ben Y brought a HUGE creepy crawly brown wood spider!
1/ What do spiders use their web for?
2/ Where might wood spiders like to live?

Madison had a newly hatched monarch butterfly, it was still flexing its soft new wings.
Ms Daniels couldn't resist taking some photos of it .
The questions about the butterfly are on the photo collage.

Jacob's tooth

At Kapahaka today we had some excitement, so we thought we had better write a letter to the Tooth Fairy. Do you think the Tooth Fairy will like our letter?

Friday 8 April 2011

Dear Tooth Fairy

Today at Kapahaka when we were practising the rakau Jacob banged his top front tooth.
He thought it was just bleeding but his tooth had actually come out.
We looked for the tooth at morning-tea time but it is nowhere to be found.
We are very sorry, please be kind to Jacob.

Reading Poll Results

We trialled running a poll via our blog.
We asked people to vote on "What do good readers do?"
Our overwhelming response was that good readers use lots of strategies (clues) to help them work out words they don't know or to work out meaning.

A good reader can:
1/ Use picture clues
2/ Read-on
3/ Re-read
4/ Sound it out
5/ Use blends and chunks

The closed poll and its results can be found at the very bottom of our blog.

It was great to see you all!

Hi Room One It was so great to see you all yesterday - you were very hard at work on your writing before I came and interrupted you, well done. I got home and guess who was in my mailbox? - Flat Stanley. I will take him to university with me on Monday and then he can help me with my learning :-) It was nice to meet Kate and Ben - I'm sure you are enjoying being part of Room One. I liked seeing how you solved the problem of the flag missing off the letterbox - clever kids! Have a great week. Love from Mrs Clark

Guess who it was?

Powerful Verbs

We are learning to make our sentences interesting by using powerful verbs (and describing words). We started with sentences that were so boring we snored and had to make them exciting by working in our table groups. Everyone in our group had to help!

Red Table:
She got up.
Chloe G yawned and stretched, slowly climbing out of bed.

Green Table:
I went to the shops.
Serena the puppy zoomed to the ice-cream shop early on Monday morning to buy a 5-scoop chocolate ice-cream.

Yellow Table:
He was late.
Ben S woke up late for Kuranui School on Monday morning the 28th of March because his leg was broken and it was squished.

Blue Table:
They went out.
Ben 10 and Batman sprinted to the doctors in Hamilton because they were sick and they and to say "arhhhhh".

23 March 2011

Problem solving to send our letters

We finished our buddy letters today and talked about how the posting letters works. We discovered we are lucky living out in the country because if we put the flag up on our letter box then the mail man will collect our mail too.
We raced out to post our letters and discovered to our horror that the flag on our letter box was GONE!
Back to the classroom and putting on our blue and green hats to work out what we need to do and design a very quick solution:
- a laminated piece of red paper
- mounted on a handy towel role
- slipped over the swivel and taped to the mail box

Here is our proud moment :-)

22 March 2011

Hi Room One

It certainly did rain hard in Matamata this morning - I went for a run in it and looked like I had been swimming! It's good to see you are learning to 'manage self' when wet days occur. With winter aproaching it will mean you have safe breaks.

I bet you enjoyed having Mrs Roskam again - what new learning did you do?

I'm going to Hamilton to university all day tomorrow to participate in a research project about how we help you to be good learners - it will be interesting.

I look forward to getting you letters in my mailbox. Have you had a chance to visit our school's new website that clever Mrs Webb has created? You can access your class blog through it. Teach your mum and dad how to do it.

Have a good week everyone.

Love from

Constable Louise visits again - Room 1 and 3's Internet Rules

We had Constable Louise come and visit with Room One and Three again today, we watched the Bryan and Bobby DVDs again and came up with ideas in pairs to create our class rules. We decided that having the same rules in both classes was the best choice.

Room One and Three’s Internet Safety Rules

1 / T.A.R.

T - Think about how it makes you feel.

A - Ask is it good or bad, do I need to get a grown up?

R - Remember:

      • don’t give out pesonal informtion (name, address, password. etc).
      • never meet anyone from on the Internet.

2/ Always use your manners

    • talk to each other like you want to be talked to.
    • anything you put there will be there FOREVER.
    • if someone is mean to you, don’t reply, tell someonoe.

3/ Keep your computer somewhere that it can be seen (a family room or our classroom).

4/ Always ask a grown up if you can use the computer or are going somewhere new.

5/ People aren’t always who they say they are - how can you check?

6/ If in doubt - ASK a grown up for help!!!

Hi Room 1

Hello everybody - I have taken some time out from my readings to catch up on what you've been learning about - it looks far more exciting than my learning :-). I love how you have shown your understanding of perimeter - I wonder if you can tell me what the perimeter of our school would be? Just in case I need to put up some new fences.
You are learning to use more interesting verbs which is great - I loved seeing the crazy photos - Sam, your leap made me think you have turned into a frog!
How is Flat Stanley going? I will have to take him on a trip to University one week and show him what I get up to on Mondays.
Hope you are looking after Ms Daniels and Mrs Webb.
I miss you all.
Love Mrs Clark :-)

We've been practising our waiata...

A couple of weeks ago we posted a movie of one of our action waiata.
We have been practising and we think we have gotten much better, we don't even need Ms Daniels to sing it with at us at all now. Our Kura Kid focus this week is "Following Instructions" and we can do this using Te Reo now too.
Our next step is to make the way we say some of the words a little bit clearer.
We filmed ourselves lots of times and these are our two favourite clips.
See what you think...

14 March 2011

All Star Kura Kids learning to think outside the Box!

Constable Louise came and talked to us about being safe on a computer.
She and had some good rules to help keep ourselves safe on the computer:
T.A.R.
Think – how does this make me feel?
Ask – ask is it good or bad
Remember – never give out personal information
Our next step is to create simple and specific rules for using our computers safely.
Stay tuned for our Rules for Room One..........

Class Interviews - 100%

Thank you to each and every one of the parents and caregivers who attended Interviews.
I'm proud to say we had 100% attendance!
It is this fantastic commitment from you all that helps foster the wonderful learning environment that we have in our class.
Again - thank you, thank you, thank you!

Verbs are Action Words!

We are looking at powerful verbs to help make our writing exciting.
Words like 'went' and 'going' are BORING!!! So we came up with some better ones to use:

03 March 2011

Area and Perimeter

WALT:
1/ Measure the perimeter (outside) of an object.
2/ Measure the area (inside) of an object.

Today we explored the concept of area.
We decided that the perimeter was the outside or an object and that it surrounded it.
The area is all the filling in the middle.
We compared it to a yard full of cows waiting to be milked:
- the fence on the outside is the perimeter and holds the cows in.
- the cows are the area, if the yard held 25 cows all stood right next to each other, then the area would be 25 cows.

Our task was to use sticky squares and work out the perimeter and area of our place mats.
The perimeter was 18 sticky squares.
The area was 12 sticky squares.

Waiata - early days

We are learning to perform action waiata and respond to simple commands in Te Reo.
We thought we would use Ms Daniels's laptop to record our early attempts and then record us again later to see how much we improve.
It was great fun seeing us live on screen and we all wanted to be at the front.

Introducing our Avatars

We have taken time to create our own unique avatar. We are going to use these to label our work, travel up our writing rocket, and tag our online work. We are talking about why sometimes it is safer to use a drawing or symbol to represent us rather than a picture of who we really are. Stay tuned as we explore these ideas more...

Can you pick which drawing belongs to each of us?

Awesome Adjectives

We are learning to use adjectives in our writing but first we had to learn what 'Adjective' meant.
We worked out that it was a word that described something, so we learned that:
